Afro Punk: A Review of Past Looks

The first time I had ever heard of Afro Punk was sometime in 2013.

I remember seeing the flyer, the musical lineup and photographs of people who had gone in years prior and thinking to myself, these are my people.

I need to be there.

In the years that followed, I would always either hear about it after the fact or I wouldn’t have enough money to actually attend the festival.

I never gave up on the idea of going.

My first time going was in 2016 with my best friend Camille and it’s sort of become a tradition ever since. At least until this year, which for obvious reasons we won’t be going this weekend. It’s a bit sad because this would be year five.

Instead of dwelling on the fact that we didn’t get to go to Brooklyn this year, I thought it would be cool to reflect over my past looks. Many of these looks I made myself in preparation for the festival and other looks I embellished or at the least did a fun make up look.
